How Are Mustard Seeds Prepared?

If the farmer cultivates mustard seeds on a large scale in his field for the next season, then he can also prepare seeds for other farmers and sell them and use them. Farming methods for seed production:

  • Buy new seeds of female (A) line and male (R) line every year from the agricultural university.
  • For seed production per acre, 500 grams of female (A) line and 300 grams of male (R) line seeds are required.
  • To produce double seeds, such a field should be selected near which no other crop like mustard or cabbage mustard has been sown within 1500 meters. The seeds should be grown in fields where rye or cabbage mustard has not been cultivated during the last three years.
  • Female (A) and male (R) lines should be sown in the following ratio: Raya: 6 lines of female (A): 2 lines of male (R) Cabbage mustard: 4 lines of female (A): male (R) 2 rows i.e. after every 2 male (R) rows, 6 rows of female (A) rows should be sown. Keep a distance of 30cm between the rows.
  • For Cabbage Mustard sow 4 rows of female (A) after every 2 male (R) rows and maintain a distance of 4cm between the rows. For both crops, 2-3 weeks after sowing, remove excess plants maintaining a distance of 10-12cm between plants.
  • First, sow the male (R) line and then the female (A) line in the entire field. Leave one line empty on either side of the two male (R) lines so that its seeds do not fall between the female (A) lines. Along with this, male lines should be sown in the form of a strip around the seed production field so that more burrows (pollinators) can be obtained.
  • Recommended cultivation methods should be used for seed production. Increase pollination activity in the female (A) line by bringing uniformity in flowering time.
  • Male (R) line FRZY005′ of canola-cabbage mustard hybrid variety PGSH 1707 and its female (A) in the male (R) line ‘FRA-JR 102B’ of rye hybrid variety PHR 126. In comparison to the lines (CMS-AG24 and CMSM29), flowering starts after 4-7 days. To equalize the flowering of the male (R) line and the female (A) line, break the main branch of the female (A) lines as soon as flowering occurs. But it is not required in crops sown after November 10. There is no need to break even the main branch of Canola Raya variety RCH 1.
  • In addition to the recommended quantity of fertilizers, the application of 7.5kg urea per acre between male (R) lines after the first irrigation helps in plant growth.

Removing unnecessary plants

If there are unnecessary plants in the female (A) line and male (R) line, they should be removed before flowering. Similarly, if there are any pollinating (burrowing) plants in the female (A) line, they should be removed at the time of flowering. The work of removing unnecessary plants should be done in the morning. The work of removing unnecessary plants should be continued until all the plants have flowered. Apart from this, if some plants do not flower then they should also be thrown out.

Harvesting and seed care

  • Male (R) line and female (A) line plants should be harvested immediately after flowering so that its seeds can mix with the seeds of the female (A) line (double seeds).
  • The seeds obtained from female (A) lines are double seeds that should be harvested separately and harvested. Apart from this, before harvesting the female (A) line, all the unnecessary plants should be removed from the field so that pure seeds can be obtained.
  • The seeds should be dried thoroughly, put in a moisture-proof bag and kept in a moisture-free place.
  • About 3.0-3.5 quintals of double seeds per acre can be obtained from the crop sown on time.
