Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Her father, Gerald Thomas Hathaway, is a lawyer, and her mother, Kathleen Anne (née McCauley), an actress, was the one who inspired Anne to follow in her footsteps. When Anne was only six years old, the family moved to Millburn, New Jersey. He has an older brother, Michael, and a younger brother, Thomas.
Anne is mostly of Irish and French descent, but she also has distant Native American and German roots.
